RapeX - Controversial Anti-Rape Condom
RapeX, a very controversial anti-rape device will be available in South Africa next month. Proponents there argue that with South Africa having the highest rate of reported sexual assaults, desperate times call for desperate measures.
According to the product website, this device is available in three sizes and inserts with an applicator much like a tampon. Once correctly inserted it can not be seen. In the event of unwanted penile insertion, the prongs lining the interior of the condom will latch on to the offenders member causing intense pain. The device remains on the assailants penis as he withdraws and can only be safely removed by physicians.
While some call the measure barbaric others feel that is another option that provides a woman time to escape in the event of an assault. Like a condom, this device provides protection against STD's and unwanted pregnancy.

Anything that gives "a woman time to escape"... what's controversial about that?!

Barbaric as...oh, say, RAPE?! I think it's a pretty good idea.

Personally, I think it's a great counter measure against rape. Perhaps they could make this same device available to the indigenous American Indian women who are being raped, not by native men, but by miscreants who visit the reservations with the sole purpose of violating women, knowing full well, that there is not enough law enforcement personnel to apprehend them. Better yet, why don't we make it available to all women, regardless of their ilk? My only concern is that there could be a possibility of the assailant, although in great pain, of taking it out on the victim, i.e. giving her beating or worse, killing her. Oh yeah, I'll bet those who think it barbaric are all men.

GREAT! Once the rapist realizes what his victim has done to him hse will LIKELY KILL HER.

Well, Im male and dont think its barbaric I think its freaking hilarious. It will slow down the breeding of the monkeys in Africa now if we can only manage it here.

As a man, here is my take on this....
Effective as a deterrent, but not really effective... dangerous.
A man typically values his penis over anything else. When that is damaged, he will stop his activity, rape or whatever. He will not stop to kill his victim, or at least will concern himself with his penis long enough for the victim to escape, 10-fold.
There exists a good example of this effectiveness. Most people think that "Razorblade Suitcase" is an innocuous name of a Bush album. However, the term comes from the Vietnam War when women would insert razors into their vagina to prevent US Soldiers from raping them.
This was very effective.
However, in the current application... if this proposed device is comfortable enough for a woman to wear constantly (which it would have to be, to be effective), the possibility exists that a woman will forget its presence when having consensual sexual intercourse with a man, thus accidentally attacking the man, and damaging him for life... completely on accident.
Obviously, this isn't the goal of the device, to attack men on accident. It adds a frightening amount of risk.
So it becomes even more of a puzzle. How do we protect women from sexual assault while preserving the innocuity of consensual sex?
How do we take human error out of the equation? One small error can cause a lifetime of agony to one unsuspecting and undeserving male.
Unfortunately, I can't come up with an answer to this problem... or rather.. the current advancement of technology doesn't provide a viable solution to this problem.
The real answer would be to create a sexual gate which would be controlled by the woman's mental activity. A computer that responds to her unconscious thoughts. A device like that doesn't exist.
To tell the truth... whatever technology appears in the future, it will have to be based off of the chastity belt. That is the only invention throughout the centuries that I can name that has been effective at warding off unwanted sexual advances while it pronounces its existence as a warning to offenders to not sexually assault the wearer.
A mentally controlled chastity belt. This sounds a bit too sci-fi. Anyways.. I think I've made some good points, and some totally poorly supported points. Take from my rant what you will.

I am an Australian and i think that that is stupid. ok, raping women is wrong, but on the other hand why don't we just give them all guns and they can shoot their rapist. i know if i was going to rape some one and i got this plastic thing with vicious barbs that hooked me up. i would not be a happy man. making me the already disturbed person i am really crazy.

No one has seemed to explore the possibility of abuse by women. It would be extremely easy to blackmail a man for money with one of those on his member.
"Give me $10,000 and I'll tell them I forgot it in otherwise you'll be going down for rape."

The device needs to be truly debilitating to be safe for the woman to use. It would be a simple matter to tip the barbs with formic acid.

I would choke the bitch to death, if not worse. Maybe set her on fire and then beat her to death.... not sure which. Also, would this work on Asians??? I think not. lol.
