7 Alternative Uses for a Lemon

by Hacker Zen

LemonsLemons taste great in foods and drinks. But here are 7 alternative uses that you might not know about.

1. Whiten your shoes

Fill a spray bottle with lemon juice. Spray your shoes lightly with the lemon juice and put them in the sun. Not only will your shoes get whiter, but they'll also stink less, too.

2. Make a deodorizer

If you handle something that leaves an odor (like onions), just rub some lemon juice on your hands to remove the smell. You can also use a spray bottle with lemon juice and water instead of commercial products like Febreeze.

3. Make a natural furniture polish

If you mix a cup of olive oil with 1/2 cup lemon juice, you'll have a natural lemon furniture polish.

Keep reading after the jump for the rest.

4. Make a cough syrup and sleeping aid

Mix some lemon juice with honey (use a ratio that tastes good to you). Not only will this mixture soothe your throat, but it's commonly claimed to help you relax and sleep better.

5. Make a cleaning paste

You can mix lemon juice with either salt or baking soda to create a cleaning paste for hard to clean areas. (Be sure to test the paste on an inconspicuous area first.)

6. Make a battery

A lemon's high acidity makes it better than a potato if you want to make a battery for fun or as a science project.

7. Keep Fruits from turning brown

Fill a spray bottle with lemon juice. Whenever you have fruit that you don't want to turn brown, give it a quick spray.
